Federal Highway Administration Revises Rules to Make Highways Safer

As part of his continuing effort to improve safety on the nation’s roads and bridges, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today released a comprehensive update to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The manual, which has been administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) since 1971, sets the standards for road safety throughout the country.

“Safety is this Department’s top priority,” said Secretary LaHood. “These new and updated standards will help make our nation’s roads and bridges safer for drivers, construction workers and pedestrians alike.”

Handheld Instruments: StripeMaster II

For comprehensive pavement-marking measurement capability, including a built-in GPS and printer, consider the StripeMaster II. The StripeMaster II measures retroreflectivity of pavement markings per ASTM E1710 and EN 1436 30-meter geometry. Providing accurate measurements on wet (per ASTM E2176 and ASTM E2177) or dry surfaces, the lightweight StripeMaster II has an RS-232C interface that allows data to be downloaded into any traffic inventory system.

The StripeMaster II is designed for quick and easy measurements with the touch of a button. This lightweight instrument comes with wheels to make the measurement process a breeze. An internal GPS and printer come standard, allowing the field user to quickly verify the data.

The internal memory will store up to 10,000 measurements before downloading to a computer. The data transfer is simple with our datalogging software. The StripeMaster II connects to any standard computer using an RS-232C interface. Our mapping software allows the user to plot the data on a clickable and printable map to quickly identify problem areas that need attention.
