Federal Highway Administration Revises Rules to Make Highways Safer

As part of his continuing effort to improve safety on the nation’s roads and bridges, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today released a comprehensive update to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The manual, which has been administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) since 1971, sets the standards for road safety throughout the country.

“Safety is this Department’s top priority,” said Secretary LaHood. “These new and updated standards will help make our nation’s roads and bridges safer for drivers, construction workers and pedestrians alike.”

The MUTCD is the national standard for all traffic control devices, including traffic signs, pavement markings, signals and any other devices used to regulate, warn or guide traffic. Ensuring uniformity of traffic control devices across the nation – from their messages and placement to their sizes, shapes and colors – helps to...

Lab Instruments: Model 940D Photometric Range System

The RoadVista Model 940D Computerized Photometric Range System is the ultimate in photometric testing of retroreflective materials, devices and light sources. It allows the material engineer and the light source designer to characterize their products, whether purchased and developed in-house.

When used in conjunction with Gamma Scientific's Model FM-100 Flash Measurement Photometer or Model DR-2000 Photometer, the system allows photometric measurements that determine the effective intensity of red and white strobe type anti-collision lights for aircraft and integrated illuminance energy in units of LUX seconds (lumen/m² per second) and luminous intensity energy (candela second) for barricade and other flashing lamp sources.

New system software enables a single operator to perform highly accurate measurements in a matter of minutes. For example, perform absolute measurements with ease. Simplify retroreflectance measurements via default measurement sequences conforming to ASTM E809 procedures A and B for retroreflective materials. Or utilize SAE configurations for measuring light sources such as headlights, taillights and message and warning lights. Single, vector and matrix measurements are possible with easily programmed data collection macro sequence files.
